Lasallian Global Prayer Community: 10 PRINCIPLES OF LASALIAN LEADERSHIP FOR THE DIRECTOR

1. The « gravity-filled ability »

The Director must maintain a balance between closeness and respect. La Salle taught that too much familiarity dissolves authority, but too much distance nullifies trust. It should be an accessible shelter, but maintaining the dignity that the office represents.

2. The knowledge of the « genius » of every teacher

Inspired by the discernment the Saint asked for in treating students, the Director must know the talents and weaknesses of his teachers. You cannot lead a heterogeneous group with a homogeneous instruction manual; the direction must be personalized.

3. Vigilance as an act of charity

Principal’s observation in the classroom should not look for the fault for punishment but the area of improvement for growth. It’s a « loving watch » that ensures the teacher doesn’t feel alone in the struggles of his ministry.

4. Correction in private and gentle

De La Salle was sharp: correction must never arise from anger or impatience. The Principal must wait for the appropriate time for his words to be received as a balm and not as an attack, always preserving the dignity of the teacher in front of his colleagues and students.

5. Fostering the « spirit of partnership »

The Director is the architect of the union. Their primary work is to avoid factions and individualism, constantly remembering that educational work is held « together and by association ». The success of one is the success of the community.

6. Consistency as a living lesson

« Make your behavior a living lesson for them. » The Director cannot demand punctuality, order or charity if he does not embody them himself. Your moral authority is born from example, not from official appointment.

7. Caring for Spiritual and Emotional Well Being

To the Founder, the Director was a Shepherd. In today’s context, this entails looking out for mental health and balance for teachers. An exhausted or discouraged teacher cannot be « God’s ambassador » in the classroom; the Principal must be the one who fan the fire of his vocation.

8. Communication « sweet and firm »

Inspired by the Schools Directory, the Principal should be clear in his guidelines but gentle in his form. Clarity avoids confusion (which generates anxiety), and sweetness avoids resentment (which generates resistance).

9. Delegation as a vote of confidence

La Salle entrusted responsibilities to its Brothers to form them. The Principal should not be a micro-manager, but someone who empowers his teachers, allowing them to exercise their judgment and pedagogical creativity under supervision that guides without suffocating.

10. Reflective silence in the face of conflict

The Holy Founder valued silence as a tool of prudence. In the face of a crisis or disagreement with a teacher, the Director must practice reflective silence before acting, avoiding impulsive responses and always looking for the solution that most benefits the educational mission.

« Consider that you are in charge of the souls of those you lead; therefore you must work diligently for their salvation. » (Meditation for the Time of Retreat).
